Amandum

There’s something special about letting a wine speak for itself—and Amandum’s wines do just that. We first tasted their Friulano in a blind tasting, and after just one sip, we knew we had to learn more about the winery and the little-known region of Isonzo it calls home. We were even more impressed when we met the warm, energetic family behind the label.

Amandum is nestled in the Gorizia area of Friuli, between the ancient valleys of the Isonzo and Vipacco rivers. The vineyards are protected by the Julian Alps to the north and influenced by breezes from the nearby Adriatic Sea. Overlooking the gentle plains of the Isonzo River, this land has been shaped over centuries into a uniquely favorable environment for vine growing.

The family has tended this land with care and conviction for three generations. It all started with Bianca, who planted the first vines with quiet determination and a clear vision for what this land could become. Her daughter Anna grew those early efforts into a thriving family business, laying the foundation for what followed. In time, Bianca’s grandson Enrico stepped into the vineyards and cellar, continuing the work with the same devotion. Now, a new chapter begins with Anna’s great-granddaughter Isabella, who is starting to carry the torch forward, blending tradition with a fresh perspective.

The vineyards grow in clay and iron-rich red soils that give structure and character to the wines. The land is mostly flat and lies near the Versa River, with the Isonzo flowing just below. The rivers not only supply irrigation water but also help regulate the microclimate. The rows are planted north to south, ensuring optimal sun exposure and natural airflow.

Farming at Amandum is intentionally low-intervention. Though not certified organic, they practice sustainability with great care and attention to the land. Their Friulano vineyards, planted by Bianca in the 1950s, are the oldest, while the Pinot Grigio vines date back to the late 1970s. These mature vineyards consistently produce fruit with remarkable depth and character.

Isabella brings a fresh perspective to Amandum’s long-standing tradition, deeply rooted in the DOC Isonzo. After years abroad in London, Sydney, and Milan, gaining extensive experience in hospitality and the restaurant industry, she returned to Friuli to lead the winery’s sales and commercial development. In addition to promoting her own family’s wines, Isabella also founded an organization for young winemakers in Friuli and now travels across Europe alongside others from the region, championing Friulian wine and encouraging a new generation to discover and enjoy it.
