Carma
Carma came onto the radar of our Small Victories family in the most romantic way. Our good friend and winemaker Edoardo Losappio, of Villa Le Prata, introduced us to his fiancée, Caterina, and her father, and we were honored that they selected us to launch their painstakingly crafted, beautiful wines in the United States.
Massimiliano Carnasciali is a bit of a fanatic, in the best possible way. He spent more than forty years restoring 14th-century buildings and traditional Tuscan farmhouses across his property in Radda in Chianti, near the Etruscan settlement of Poggio la Guardia, where evidence of millennia of winemaking still marks the land. Preserving and enhancing that history and agricultural heritage became Massimiliano's life's work, and he brought the same exacting eye for detail to the vineyards themselves, rebuilding the ancient terraces stone by stone so the original plots could be replanted.
Now that some of those revived terraces are bearing fruit, Massimiliano and his daughter, Caterina, are making wine together, with the not-so-simple goal of producing the highest quality possible while staying true to the identity of Radda. The vineyards cascade across a natural amphitheater at 600 meters above sea level with southern exposure, planted to Guyot-trained Sangiovese vines in soils composed mainly of Alberese and Galestro, with varying percentages of clay. Every step in the vineyard is done by hand, and only organic practices have been used from the very beginning.
Looking ahead, the family is restoring three additional terraced vineyards, working toward bringing roughly three hectares of vines into production. They're also planning a new cellar to match the scale of their ambitions. Through it all, their vision for the future stays modest and intentional, with a focus on a small, devoted audience in markets that will appreciate their craft. They are the perfect fit for our Small Victories family.
