Klocke Estate
The story of Klocke Estate begins, as the best ones often do, not with a business plan but with a moment of genuine curiosity. Forty years ago, an MIT student named John Frishkopf signed up for a wine-tasting course on the side. That small decision set off a decades-long fascination with fermentation, distillation, and the relationship between land and what grows from it. After years living in Europe and absorbing the traditions of Cognac and Calvados firsthand, Frishkopf returned with a question that wouldn't leave him alone: why hadn't anyone done this properly in New York? In January 2018, he and partner Brett Mattingly found their answer in 160 acres of fallow farmland in Claverack, in the heart of the Hudson Valley, five miles from Hudson. It turns out the Hudson Valley is a near-perfect Venn diagram, with exceptional apples and a microclimate remarkably well-suited to brandy grapes. What followed was six years of land preparation, planting, and construction, the kind of deliberate, unhurried commitment that brandy itself demands.
The name says everything. "Klocke" is the Middle Dutch word for clock, a nod to the Dutch settlers who first brought brandy-making to New York in the 17th century, and a quiet acknowledgment that time is the essential ingredient here. Some of their barrels will age for decades, and they wouldn't have it any other way. Sixty of the estate's 160 acres are planted to orchards and vineyards using regenerative and organic methods, with 43 varieties of apple and 9 grape varietals, each selected specifically for distillation. Three ponds across the property feed a "swale system" of shallow channels that manage water runoff, filter pollutants, and increase rainwater infiltration, supplementing the estate's drip irrigation when needed. It's thoughtful, unhurried stewardship in every corner of the land.
The distillery itself is stunning. Two stills take center stage: a copper Alembic Charentais imported from France and a bespoke German pot still, where the spirit takes shape across multiple distillation runs before moving to French oak. Nearby, the barrel house, or chai, was built exactly as they have been in Europe for 200 to 300 years, with clay and lime soil floors and walls of straw bales coated in plaster to allow maximum breathability. The conditions are built for patience, not speed. What Klocke has built in Claverack is not just a distillery. It is a complete vision of what American brandy could be, rooted in history, shaped by a particular landscape, and made by people who understand that the most meaningful things take time. We are proud to share it.
